Do you remember the days of colorful the smile? When a patient would visit their orthodontist, their braces might change from a summery light blue color to a bright orange to match the oncoming fall season. If you’ve ever wondered why we don’t use these colorful bands at Dr. Gordon Niles Orthodontics, it’s thanks to one of the latest
treatment advancements made in orthodontics: The Damon System.
What is the Damon System?
The Damon System consist of braces which are tie-less, meaning they don't need to be tightened, making them gentle to the teeth and tissues. These braces combine three key components which when used together, delivers faster treatment, fewer appointments, greater comfort and consistently high quality results.
The Damon passive self-ligating braces make use of high-tech “shape-memory” wires that move teeth quickly and which require fewer adjustments. This treatment approach aligns your teeth and enhances your facial aesthetics, usually without the need for extractions or the use of a palatal expander.
What Does Self-Ligating Mean?
In order to understand what self-ligating means, it's important to first understand how conventional braces are made. Traditional metal braces are made of two elements – metal brackets which fit across the teeth and arch wires that hold the brackets in place. The arch wire used with these braces is secured to the bracket by an elastic tie or “ligature”. This method of attachment prevents the wire from sliding and it requires frequent adjustments as the teeth gradually move. These braces create a great deal of friction which leads to treatment being slow and uncomfortable.
Damon Braces are self-ligating which means there are no elastic bands used to apply gradual tension. Instead, these braces use a unique slide mechanism to exert a lighter, more tolerable force on the teeth. This means you have more comfort, fewer appointments and faster treatment.
Because Damon self-ligating braces are low-friction in nature, this treatment option assures improved tooth position and better facial harmony. The titanium, shape-memory wires used with Damon Braces are designed to gently guide your teeth into the ideal position for improved facial symmetry - usually without the need for rapid palatal expansion, extraction or surgery.
Damon braces are low-profile in nature, making them a discreet way to improve your smile. And because these braces are small, it's easier to keep your teeth clean during treatment. Since there are no elastic ties used with these self-ligating braces it's easier to clean around your braces so you're able to easily brush and floss your teeth for good oral hygiene.
